Sam Arnold wins Legacy Championship in playoff.
Sam Arnold of Vineyard Golf Course became the first Section event champion of the year after winning the Legacy Championship on the second playoff hole. Arnold and The Golf Club of Dublin’s Jeff Olson both carded early 1-under-par 71s that held up throughout the day. Both players parred the first playoff hole before Arnold tapped in a birdie on the second playoff hole to secure his first victory of the new season.
Clear, sunny skies greeted the field as they returned to SOPGA tournament action for the first time since the 2019 season. Pristine course conditions matched the beautiful weather on Monday, masking the true difficulty of the Donald Ross-designed course. Quick greens and US Open-like rough tormented players across the board in this opening event of the season. The most common responses after the round were all eerily similar: gnarly rough, but a fair course.
Arnold was able to conquer the tougher conditions by remaining remarkably consistent and avoiding big mistakes. He turned at 1-under then surged to 3-under after back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11. He finished with a bogey on the par-5 eighteenth then had to wait out the rest of the field before heading to the playoff with Olson.
